Local groups and authorities are calling on Jönköping to submit a bid to host the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
Jönköping may enter into the race to host Eurovision 2024 if local groups can persuade the city to bid. The call for the southern Swedish city to bid for next year’s Eurovision Song Contest is being pushed by Småland Tourism, who believe the contest could offer an incredible boost to the city and the wider region.
The city is home to just under 150,000 residents and is the most populous city in Småland. Jönköping has links to the Eurovision Song Contest being the birthplace of Agnetha Fältskog, who won the Eurovision Song Contest 1974 as part of ABBA.
The venue that Jönköping would be bidding with is the Husqvarna Garden, a purpose-built arena that was opened in 2000. The arena however does not meet the capacity requirements for the contest, having capacity for 7,000 people, it is the tenth-largest indoor arena in Sweden.
Loreen won the 67th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden with “Tattoo”. She is the first female two-time winner of the competition, having previously won the 2012 contest with “Euphoria”.
This is Sweden’s seventh Eurovision win, following victories in 1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012 and 2015. This makes Sweden the joint most successful country in Eurovision alongside Ireland. Loreen has also become the first woman and the second person overall to win Eurovision twice.
